What's New in Ag Literacy

New this year—AITC Supplemental Resources are online!
Reinforce what students learn during the Ag in the Classroom presentation.  A wealth of 1st through 4th grade resources is now available online so that you can pre-teach important concepts and vocabulary or conduct related follow-up activities.  Check it out here.

Food for Thought Placemat Design Contest
The Food for Thought Placemat Design Contest is the perfect follow-up to your Ag in the Classroom presentation!  All 1st-4th grade students are invited to illustrate their understanding of how agriculture impacts their lives.  The contest culminates with recognition of the winners and their teachers during an Awards Night which will take place April 22 at the Farm Bureau Center for Agriculture. Designs from each grade earning first place are printed on placemats for use in restaurants across the county!  The entry deadline for the 2010 contest is Friday, March 12.  Click here for contest rules.  Download required entry forms here.

Summer Agriculture Institute
We are now taking applications for the 2010 Summer Agriculture Institute, “Teaching About Agriculture & Sustainability”.  This is the 12th year for this graduate-level course, which is offered in cooperation with Northern Illinois University .  Class meetings will take place on May 12, 19, and 26 from 5-8 p.m. each evening and on June 14-17 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (June times subject to slight change due to tour schedules). Find out more.  Fill out an application form.

Ag Literacy Ambassadors
Forty of the 46 elementary, middle and high schools in DeKalb County now have an Ag Literacy Ambassador.  The Ambassadors have the inside track on the wealth of educational resources and programs offered by our organization and by organizations across the state and country.  They can help you find out how to tap into innovative resources to teach about food production, nutrition, the environment, energy, careers, and more!  Not sure if your school has an Ambassador?  Check this list.  If your school does not have an Ambassador and you’d like to be that person, contact Rhodora to find out how.
